about

Since his brief appearance on the ‘Synaesthesia’ compilation back in December last year, we have been eager to see Barom’s name to return to the Off-Switch Audio catalogue. Journeying into the depths of his distinct grime influenced style, this 6-track-long solo release has definitely lived up to our expectations. Based in Leipzig, Germany, his truly unique and individual approach at the 140 sound has drawn the attention of several big names in the scene including Commodo, Gantz and more.

The release kicks off at a steady pace with ‘Dusk’; an instrumental reminiscent of early noughties pirate radio sets revamped with high fidelity sound design, bespoke rhythmic fills and subtle harmonic variations. Barom then brings up the hype levels with the catchy and evolving melodies in ‘Agon’.

3 tracks in, the poetically named title piece ‘don’t leave, never arrive please’ maintains this catchy and energetic vibe with a voyage of intricately arranged sounds, which flow gracefully into the bouncy bass-driven ‘Bright-Eyed’. This one grounds itself with a captivatingly memorable hook that grows throughout the track and satisfyingly hits all the right places across the frequency spectrum.

The playful vocal chops of ‘Pour Gold’ then culminate into yet another melodically driven earworm. Barom’s beautifully placed rhythmic variations and subtle production tricks lace together to create an exciting climax, before turning in an unexpectedly blissful direction elsewhere with ‘Inim’. This outro piece draws the release to a stunning melancholic close, with lush pads, evolving harmonies and pristine synth work.

With its fantasy-like sonic narrative and strong individual production aesthetic, this near album-length body of work is one we are extremely proud to present here at Off-Switch. To top it off, our in-house visual artist, animator and co-founder of the Vivid State night in Bristol Ori, has provided us with some amazing cover art.

While the intricacy and attention to detail showcased throughout this release is perfectly suited for a start-to-finish listen at home, we greatly look forward to a time when we can hear these tracks shake through a soundsystem once again!
